In a move dedicated to bettering education in schools, Firaxis is donating Civilization V to a non-profit organization that will retool the game to be put to good use in schools in the US and Canada. With some adjustments, it will be used to further students understandings of culture and even history.

“We hope this is the first step in a really interesting and valuable journey,” said Mr. Sid Meier, creator of Civilization, noting that this isn’t the first time that educators have tried to use Civilization to help their students, “We’re seeing this evolution to online courses and online universities,” he said. “It just seemed like the time was right.”

GlassLab, the developer that will be getting the games to schools, has worked with several games to serve as educational tools, such as Oregon Trail and Minecraft. The developer states that over 10,000 will get the educational version of Civilization V.

This is but the latest move from Firaxis, who is currently making Civilization VI.
