Catch A Theatrical Preview Of DANDADAN One Month Early

dan da dan

One of the most anticipated anime of 2024 yet to debut is Science SARU’s Dandadan, sometimes called “Dan Da Dan” as three words (but it’s never explained who “Dan” is). It’s set to premiere globally in October, but thanks to a deal with distributor GKIDS, you don’t have to wait that long.

The first three episodes of Dandadan will be screened in movie theaters this September in what they’re calling the “First Encounter Event.” Bonus material will be included in the screening, like interviews with manga creator Yukinobu Tatsu and editor Shihei Lin, series director Fūga Yamashiro, and other people. So why should you care? Because the show just sounds awesome. Here’s the deal…

Dandadan is about two teenagers who are both into the paranormal, but despite this can’t get along. The problem is specific: Momo, who comes from a family of spirit mediums, believes in ghosts, but not aliens. Okarun, her classmate, is convinced aliens are visiting Earth — but thinks ghosts don’t exist.

Momo and Okarun each resolve to prove their beliefs to each other. Momo goes to an abandoned hospital where there have been UFO sightings, while Okarun goes to a tunnel people say is haunted. They find evidence all right, but not the type they were looking for! This city is about to be overrun with space invaders AND yokai at the SAME TIME — with Momo and Okarun caught in the middle!

The Japanese voice cast for Dandadan stars Shion Wakayama (Takina Inoue in Lycoris Recoil) as Momo; Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Okarun; Mayumi Tanaka (Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece) as Turbo Granny, and Kazuya Nakai (Roronoa Zoro in One Piece) as the Serpoians.

Dandadan: First Encounter opens in US theaters September 13. As for where it’s specifically playing, participating theaters haven’t been announced yet. Keep an eye on the GKIDS website for that info to pop up.
