Netflix has a very solid lineup of anime coming this fall. There are people who know because they’ve….well, they’ve seen it already.
No one knows who, but someone hacked into Netflix’s servers yesterday to retrieve episodes of anime shows the streamer has yet to premiere. These include episodes one through six of Dandadan, episodes one, three and four of the Ranma 1/2 remake, and the ENTIRE Terminator Zero season.
What’s really bad is that these episodes were supposed to make their world premieres through special events. GKids was to release the first three episodes of Dandadan theatrically on September 13, and before that, the first episode of Ranma 1/2 was set to go public for the first time at the Anime NYC convention on August 24.
These events are still scheduled to happen, and we don’t anticipate a dropoff in attendance, as there’s not much overlap between the folks who WANT to see these things with an audience and those who would rather push a button at home. There also hasn’t been much evidence that incidents like these harm viewing numbers that much. The real problem, as with most TV and movie leaks, will be avoiding spoilers.
It’s also worth noting these early versions are of poor quality. Blurred watermarks and timestamps abound, and the video resolution is far from HD at a blurry 640×360. At least Netflix was able to avoid letting the HQ versions slip out, if they were even on the server to begin with.
Both Dandadan and Ranma 1/2 are set to have their honest premieres in October; Dandadan will also be available on Crunchyroll, but Ranma will be a Netflix exclusive. Terminator Zero releases its entire first season at once on August 29.
My advice to you these next few weeks is to avoid following any moron on social media who would spoil something, and also, never visit the “Recommended for you” tab, but that second one’s just common sense in general.
