The fourth season of battle shonen series Blue Exorcist will come to Crunchyroll October 5, according to a recently released thirty second promo video. Here is that promo and the earlier released longer trailer:
What we can gleam from this trailer is that this next arc appears to be the ever common exam arc. Very little else about the plot is easily discerned as to what we can expect in terms of plot.
Viz’s official synopsis of the series as a whole:
“Raised by Father Fujimoto, a famous exorcist, Rin Okumura never knew his real father. One day a fateful argument with Father Fujimoto forces Rin to face a terrible truth—the blood of the demon lord Satan runs in Rin’s veins! Rin swears to defeat Satan, but doing that means entering the mysterious True Cross Academy and becoming an exorcist himself. Can Rin fight demons and keep his infernal bloodline a secret? It won’t be easy, especially when drawing his father’s sword releases the demonic power within him!”
The series has had a rough history in terms of its localization and adaptation. The first season was a modest, albeit controversial hit because the second half of the anime drastically diverged from the plot of the manga in a way that upset many fans. After streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu in 2011, it got another piece of exposure when it aired on Toonami in 2014, although it was drastically overshadowed by a certain Titan of the industry, if you catch my drift. Season two basically pretended the second half of season one never happened and faithfully adapted the next half of the manga, pleasing manga fans, yet confusing those only familiar with the anime. The second season was initially exclusive to Hulu, which is infamous for underpromoting their exclusives, but since season three Crunchyroll has been the series permanent home. None of the subsequent seasons have yet to have Toonami airings.
Although it isn’t the most popular series on Crunchyroll, it still has a solid fanbase and fans are sure to be eagerly awaiting the fourth season. Whether you’re a returning fan or someone who’s watched every episode on Hulu and Crunchyroll, look for the new season on October 5th.
