Blue Beetle Animated Series Now In Development

Warner Bros’ newest superhero animated series will star the Blue Beetle! Apparently the studio started work on a BB cartoon earlier this year, with Miguel Puga (The Loud House, The Casagrandes) as showrunner and Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble, The Fosters) writing scripts. The news was broken by Deadline over the weekend.

The news is surprising, given that Blue Beetle was just given his chance at Hollywood stardom with a feature film that was all but ignored by moviegoers. What’s even MORE surprising is this: reportedly this animated series would be a continuation of the movie.

Did you see Blue Beetle? Neither did I. No one did. This is kind of a miraculous second chance for Jaime Reyes, the man in the bug suit. Ángel Manuel Soto, executive producer of the feature film, will oversee this production alongside Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

James Gunn, current overlord of the DC Cinematic Universe, says the Blue Beetle movie is unrelated to the now-disconnected DCU it was released at the tail end of. He says it has more in common with his own DC Universe that has yet to premiere. Does this mean the true start of the JGCU was Blue Beetle instead of Superman? …He says it doesn’t mean that either. It’s not exactly his universe but it’s “connected.” We may have to wait to find out what all that means.

In terns of casting, it is unknown if the animated series use the same actors as the live-action movie. The theatrical version starred Adriana Barraza, Elpida Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez and Xolo Maridueña as Reyes.

Blue Beetle has been an element of other DCU cartoons, going back twenty years to his appearances on The Brave And The Bold, but he’s never been the headliner. We wish Mr. Reyes better luck in animation than he had in real physical space.
