BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Joins EVO 2018 Championship

What’s this year’s game lineup for the EVO Championship Series, America’s most popular fighting tournament? Eight games were just announced today, but what makes BlazBlue the most curious choice?

It’s because the release date for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle (June 5, 2018) isn’t far off from the EVO 2018 finals (August 3, 2018). The game will be fairly new for most contestants, and there will actually be characters they’ll be unfamiliar with. Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long, two characters from Rooster Teeth’s RWBY series. They will make their public premieres at the event. They won’t be available to purchase until EVO is over!

This could be a non-issue depending on how it turns out. Two months of practice may be enough for most professional players. It’s still the closest timing we’ve seen between the release of a game and its placement in a major esports event.

BlazBlue is a crossover fighter bringing together characters from four separate properties: BlazBlue, RWBY, Persona 5 and Under Night In-Birth. The other seven games at this year’s EVO will be Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, Injustice 2 and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

The EVO 2018 Championship series will be held in Las Vegas from June 3 through June 5.
