While you were sleeping, the first trailer for Marvel’s Black Widow silently slipped onto cyberspace like a well-trained spy, appearing online at midnight December 3 (or 3 AM in the Eastern time zone). Natasha lives! Sort of.
As everybody knows, Black Widow got a raw deal from the entire Avengers plotline. She often played second or sometimes even third banana to the muscular male heroes, her job in Age of Ultron was to play prisoner, her merchandise was hard to track down, and then in the War Against Thanos she…..died. Now Marvel’s trying to make amends with this prequel movie, which ScarJo gets all to herself.
She will, however, be sharing it with family. Her daddy is Sheriff Hopper dressed as a red-helmeted maniac (The Red Guardian)! In addition to David Harbour, Florence Pugh also stars as Yelena, Natasha’s sister, and Rachel Weisz plays her mother Melina. The film is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige.
Marvel says Black Widow is the first official movie of Phase Four in the MCU. That means we should be learning something in the past that will have consequences for the present. This trailer doesn’t give anything away. But it at least confirms this awesome superheroine is finally getting the attention she deserves, even if it’s for the last time.
Black Widow opens May 1, 2020.
