2020 is looking to be a very interesting and also a very experimental year when it comes to superhero films. For while we have stalwarts making their return or debut in solo films via Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow, we also have The Eternals (which is based on a lesser-known faction in Marvel Comics) and of course, the Birds of Prey. Who aren’t fully embracing their comic book roots per se as Harley Quinn is taking the helm/focal point in this adaptation.
The second trailer for the movie has debuted, and while the first trailer helped give us context as to the tone of the film as a whole, this one delves more into the story of why Harley is in trouble, why the Birds of Prey need to go and ally with one another, and of course, just how wacky, insane, and crazy things are going to get before the film is over.
But for the eagle-eyed fan, you’re going to see a lot of nods and references to the character’s history and backstories, as well as their abilities and ties to other things. You’ll see Ace Chemicals (the place that Joker was born) being blown up, you’ll see the first looks at the actual Black Mask of Roman Sionis (played by Ewan McGregor), and yes, he does where it in the film, you’ll see the Canary Cry, one of Harley’s hyenas, and so much more.
And of course, you’ll see Harley being Harley with plenty to listen to, look at, and smile at when things get crazy. Including a look at the “Harleen” personality that she buried long ago.
This is the second R-Rated film in as many years for DC Comics, though it won’t do as well as Joker more than likely, it is projected to be a big success for DC Comics and Warner Bros.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn) will arrive in theaters on February 7th.
