Batwoman Shocker: Entire Character To Be Replaced?

As if the abrupt departure of Ruby Rose from Batwoman, the series she starred in, wasn’t shocking enough…word broke late last evening that the producers of the CW series are not looking to recast the role, but retire it, replacing Kate Kane with an entirely different character.

Copies are beginning to circulate online of a casting call sheet describing “Ryan Wilder,” a twentysomething female who “is about to become Batwoman.” The validity of the sheet was confirmed by Deadline. Who was Ryan Wilder in the comics? No one…but that may not mean anything. For secrecy’s sake, casting sheets don’t always use the intended names, so it’s possible this isn’t actually the finalized name. But that’s hardly reassuring given everything else.

The description reads: “She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

Virtually no one who has heard this news has reacted positively. The series up to this point has revolved entirely around Kate Kane. All the supporting characters are connected to her by blood or work for her father or cousin. The series’ main villain is Kate’s twin. And to make matters worse, the first season was cut short by a couple of episodes, leaving danging plot threads that would take Kate Kane to resolve!

Fans are up in arms, and would much prefer the Kane role be recast instead of this. We hope the negative reaction will reach the producers of this show in time, and convince them to change plans. Batwoman is currently scheduled to resume new episodes in 2021…hopefully with an actual Batwoman.
