Baby Dolls Turn Gritty In AMC’s Ultra City Smiths

When you hear that someone’s working on a TV series in which baby dolls are animated by stop-motion as players in a detective crime thriller parody, what’s your first thought? Mine was “Who is Jason Mantzoukas playing?”

AMC, a network known more for animating the dead than cartoon characters, is the surprising source of this one. In Ultra City Smiths, mayoral candidate Carpenter J. Smith has gone missing. Two detectives have been hired to crack the case. There are eight suspects, and they’re all named Smith. This one is gonna be an all-nighter!

And yes, Mantzoukas is on the voice list, because it was inevitable, but there’s also Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Alia Shawkat, Tim Meadows, Debra Winger, Luis Guzmán, Tom Waits, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, John C. Reilly and Bebe Neuwirth. It’s the latest from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the team behind Robot Chicken and pretty much every other adult-themed stop-motion series of the last twenty years including Hulu’s MODOK. Ultra City Smiths was created by Steve Conrad (Patriot), and he also serves as the showrunner.

The time and day in which Ultra City Smiths premieres depends on what your definition of a “premiere” is. We’re in a weird time of transition in the television industry, when streaming channels are hoarding a bigger and bigger slice of the total viewer pie, yet no one knows how big the change is going to get. This has forced every cable channel that isn’t already connected to a streaming service to start one, and usually, they perform the bare minimum by calling it the same name as the channel with a “+” added.

So Ultra City Smiths technically premieres today on AMC+, but since no one has AMC+, the show actually premieres this fall on the AMC channel. Hopefully these dolls can bring the funny.
