On January 22, Netflix will release a new anime film entitled Cosmic Princess Kaguya. Very little about the plot of this film has been revealed, but we get a trailer vaguely revealing what this film will be like.
One of the rare tidbits about the plot we have been given is that the film will be inspired by the millennium old Japanese literary work The Legend of the Bamboo Cutter. Anime fans are probably most familiar with Kaguya from this story being the inspiration for an extremely controversial villain from Naruto Shippuden, but this doesn’t seem to be the same take on Kaguya. We also know that the film will showcase Vocaloid songs. The final bit of plot information revealed is that it will be set in the virtual realm Tsukuyomi (which hopefully won’t be like the Infinite Tsukuyomi from Shippuden and lead to loads of filler episodes). From the trailers, this looks like the film will be a “cute girls form a band” anime, a popular genre. Only this time it seems like the cute girls will be forming a band in outer space, or at least a virtual reality simulation of outer space.
Here’s the trailer:

It is obvious from what we know that music will heavily feature in the film. The director of this film is Shingo Yamashita, who is most well known for directing opening sequences in popular anime television series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, Going from directing opening theme sequences to a full length film is going to be a huge leap, so we’ll see how he adapts to the new medium. Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido will collaborate for the animation.
Netflix did have a music themed megahit in KPop Demon Hunters and maybe Netflix picked this movie up to cash in on the girl group based animated movie phenomenon. We’ll see how audiences react to it, but with so little information revealed, it’s hard to know what to expect.
