Amazon Announces Adult Animated Series “The Hospital”

Amazon Studios

If you enjoyed Natasha Lyonne and Greta Lee in Russian Doll, they’re about to team up once again in a different series…this one animated. Amazon Studios has announced “The Hospital,” from the creator of Russian Doll (Cirocco Dunlap) and executive-produced by Lyonne and Maya Rudolph, for the Prime streaming service.

Don’t let the generic title fool you. “The Hospital” is about a medical facility…IN SPACE! It follows expert surgeons Sleech and Klak, the best in the galaxy..and the ones you call when things get REALLY messy. Also, they’re both female — Lee is playing Dr. Sleech, while Keke Palmer has been cast as Dr. Klak.

Lyonne and Rudolph will also be heard in the series: Natasha is Nurse Tup, described as “a playful nihilist with chameleon flesh who thrives in the chaos of the Hospital.” Rudolph is Dr. Vlam, “a robot intern who has been alive for at least 20,000 years.” And boy, does Vlam have stories….over her extended existence she’s held every occupation from a queen to a thief, as well as a “stay-at-home mom of 500.”

Other cast members will include Keiran Culkin as Dr. Plowp, a fellow co-worker who has a love-hate relationship with Sleech, and Sam Smith as Dr. Azel, “a galactically-renowned surgeon with ambiguous morals and six well-manicured feet.”

“Cirocco [Dunlap] is a total original. Brilliant and wildly talented with an utterly singular voice and boundless imagination,” gushed Rudolph and Lyonne in a joint statement. “She’s also ridiculously funny and finds the most unexpected ways to make you laugh while exploring complex existential questions! It has been a thrill to watch her nurture the seed of an idea and grow it into two seasons so beautifully.”

Two? Yup, Amazon has enough confidence in The Hospital to grant it two years of material right out of the gate. Wish they’d had that kind of foresight with Invincible, but here we are waiting. While The Hospital has been in development at Amazon since 2020, it does not have a release window yet.
