Alicia Vikander Beats Out Daisy Ridley For Lara Croft Role In Tomb Raider Reboot

Alicia Vikander has been selected to play Lara Croft in the upcoming reboot movie based on the popular “Tomb Raider” video game. Vikander, who recently won an Academy Award for her role in “The Danish Girl” star Alicia Vikander will be playing Lara Croft in the MGM reboot of “Tomb Raider” and reportedly beat out “Star Wars'” Daisy Ridley for the role – although with the caveat that Vikander had always been the first choice.

The original “Tomb Raider” video game was released in 1996 and have sold over 35 million units, including the “prequel” Square Enix released in 2013 with a younger Croft. A pair of movies, released in 2001 and 2003, respectively and both starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, were equally as popular and grossed $432 million worldwide.

Vikander won an Oscar for her performance in “The Danish Girl,” but also played a kick-ass secret agent in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” as well as an acclaimed performance in “Ex Machina.”
