Remember the Pokemon live-action movie that was just greenlit by Legendary Pictures? It just got a lot more interesting. Variety reports that Legendary wants none other than Alex “Gravity Falls” Hirsch to write the screenplay for it.
Hirsch is one of two potential writers Variety has confirmed Legendary is courting; the other is Nicole Perlman, who wrote Guardians of the Galaxy (not a bad choice either). Perlman has had some screenwriting experience; she did a bit of uncredited touch-up work on Thor and has Captain Marvel on her eventual plate. If Hirsch gets the gig, it’d be his first feature film.
To refresh your memories, the live-action Pokemon movie isn’t going to be like any other feature that’s had the Pokemon logo attached to it. Nay, this one’s about a talking Pikachu with a low growly voice that solves mysteries (based on Great Detective Pikachu, a 3DS game that for some reason still hasn’t been localized). If I was assigned to find the one person that could handle a premise like this, the first thing I’d do was see if Hirsch was busy. (I know Phil Lord and Chris Miller are ALREADY busy, so….)
To close things, this is a drawing by Alex Hirsch of Donald Trump as a Muk. (Done well before this news came to light.)
