Aardman Announces Netflix Special “Robin Robin”

Aardman Animations (Wallace and Grimit, Shaun the Sheep, any stop-motion film where people have beady eyes and buck teeth) has entered a new partnership with Netflix to produce original content for them. The first fruit from this collaboration has been announced for arrival in November….a special called Robin Robin.

Once there was a robin named Robin. This bird managed to get into trouble before she was born, the day her egg fell out of the nest and rolled into the home of a family of mice. The mice just shrugged and decided to raise Robin as their own, and she grew up living the life and learning the skills of a rodent.

The special will star Bronte Carmichael as the voice of Robin, Adeel Akhtar as Dad Mouse, Richard E. Grant as her hoarder friend Magpie, and Gillian Anderson as the villain of the whole thing…a bird-chomping cat named Cat. Neither birds nor mice have it easy against cats, but the two species have never tried teaming up before. Perhaps with Robin Robin’s help, they can finally fight back…

Though nothing in the teaser below indicates it, Robin Robin is a holiday special. Netflix’s Christmas efforts have been hit and miss, but with Aardman on their side, they stand a chance at creating a classic.

Robin Robin won’t be the only Netflix/Aardman production. The biggest thing the pair are producing is a sequel to Aardman’s 2000 hit Chicken Run, which was announced in 2020 after two years of private pre-production. “We’ve got the perfect story, and the relationship with Netflix is kind of perfect as well because they celebrate the filmmaker and are so filmmaker friendly,” said Peter Lord, director of the original, at Annecy last year. “I feel now we can make the Chicken Run sequel we want to, the one we really care about.”

As for Robin Robin, it will fly in November 27 on Netflix, just in time for Black Friday.
