Aang Will Be The Subject of The First Avatar Studios Movie

Last year, Paramount announced the immediate founding of an entire branch of their animation department JUST for making things related to Avatar The Last Airbender and the universe thereof: Avatar Studios. And last MONTH, they clarified what their first project would be: not one, not two, but THREE animated films “set in the Avatar universe.” Neato!

Well, now it’s Comic-Con time — we’re owed some new bit of information, right? Tonight we got it: the subject of the first animated Avatar movie. It is……….well, I can try to keep you in suspense but you already saw the headline and splash image.

The news was delivered by Janet Varney — a rather unusual voice for this kind of news, as though she was the voice of the main character in Legend of Korra, she wasn’t part of the original series at all. Some are speculating that this could be some subtle hint that the second movie is about Korra, and the book she’s holding could mean the third movie is about Avatar Kyoshi. But that’s just a guess.

It might sound obvious in retrospect, but until now there was no guarantee creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino weren’t going to zag and present an Avatar no one had heard of yet. They will serve as producers on all three films, and the Aang-centric film has been assigned a director, Lauren Montgomery (who served on both ATLA and Korra).

“As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the ‘Avatar’ universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey Naito, president of animation & development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.

At the speed this news is dripping out, it may be a while before we get answers to the obvious questions we have (like at what point in Aang’s life does this film take place?) When we hear the answers, we’ll tell you all.
