Fans of the original 80’s cartoon (and the later incarnations from the 2010’s) should be intimately familiar with the main cast, the feline anthropomorphic heroes Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat. The 80’s cartoon eventually expanded to include other survivors of “Thundera”, new heroes such as Bengali, Lynx-O, and Pumyra. The 2010’s version of the show would later add others into the mix (Javan and Caspin, among others). But now there’s a new Thundercat on the prowl.

Dynamite Entertainment recently relaunched the “Thundercats” franchise as a new comic book series, starting with the recent Issue #1 released this month. Now, with the 2nd issue, writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss are introducing “Calica”. For a series that was originally designed to sell action figures, the mythology of “Thundera” and “Third Earth” has proven captivating enough over the years to allow for new characters and world building, so yeah, why not have a character based off of Calico cats?

Preliminary design for Calica

The official press release reads: “Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer products are excited to announce a huge new addition to the ThunderCats mythos, with the introduction of a brand new character in issue #2!

A brand-new member is being added to the core cast by the creative team of Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss. Fans will get the chance to meet Calica early into the second issue, which arrives in stores March 13. A potential love interest for a Lion-O trying to mature and establish himself as a worthy leader, Calica’s story could go any number of ways in the forthcoming chapters and story arcs…”

“Not only has it been great to play with the classic ThunderCats characters, having the opportunity to contribute to the lore has been a wonderful experience,” said writer Declan Shalvey. “Especially with introducing Calica (and her unique, yet naturally fitting design courtesy of Drew Moss) who will add a new dynamic that will keep the ThunderCats (and readers) on their toes.”

As her name may imply, this new young Thunderian is inspired by the appearance of Calico cats, with a tri-color fur pattern and a distinctive black patch around one of her eyes. She’s found among the wreckage of a Mu’Tant ship. More of her backstory will be revealed in the issue and beyond for readers.”

The first issue generated scores of 3.9 (out of 5) among readers on “League of Comic Geeks” and a score of 8 (out of 10) among critics on “Comic Book Roundup”. Look for the 2nd issue of “Thundercats” to arrive in comic book stores (or to be available digitally) on March 13th.
